Description
Carved by hand from seasoned sese wood, this mask flaunts exquisite textures. Godfred France applies sheets of embossed aluminum to the features and adds four brass circles. The long, narrow face rises to a peak that emulates an intricate hairdo, and the eyes are wide with innocence. “This mask was once used during puberty rites by the people of Bunkrugu in Northern Ghana,” the artisan explains. “Their leader would whistle to draw attention to the young ladies, who paraded through the community. It was considered an honor to participate in these rites.”
